Outsmarting the Sellers: Knowing How To Get a Great Deal on a Car

Posted by

It’s tough to go into a car dealer and have any degree of confidence. They are professionals who deal with prospective car shoppers every single day, and you only get to go in on such a quest every few years, if that. So how can you outsmart the guys who are trying to get you? It’s hard, but there are a few things you need to do to give yourself the most confidence you can muster. You won’t be able to ever be fully confident, and you never know what you’re doing to get, but it’s more important that you at least feel like you got a good deal, and then you can rest easy. Here are some ways you can feel like you got a good deal on a new car.

1. Get Your Credit in Good Standing

A lot of people don’t know that the monthly payment quoted on commercials is the best-case scenario, based on great credit. A dealer could quote you on a lease option that is a $200 monthly payment after some money down, as per the ad that brought you it. Then, they will check your credit and find you have a tier two or three credit rating and all of a sudden your monthly payment is significantly higher. Worst part, is they will be telling the God’s-honest Truth when they say they can’t wiggle it. Before you go for that new car, get a free credit report and clear up any negatives on your rating. Every little bit helps. Sometimes it takes a month to clear, but you can wait a month for better monthly payments.

2. Compare Among the Brand

Everyone knows that some of the prices are mandated from the national company and then others are more regional or even specific to the store. Each brand will have regional competitions and sometimes a store manager will be willing to lose a little off the sticker price in order to move units and ascend the regional leader board. That’s why you have to compare prices among the regional dealers of the same brand and try to play them off each other. If yo’re in the market for a new Nissan, you owe it to yourself to go to Gardena Nissan and then Downtown Nissan and see what different deals they can work out. Don’t be coy, tell them specifically that you literally were just at the other location, and they made such and such an offer, and ask if they can beat that. Tell them you’re ready to buy today.

3. Friends and Friends of Friends

Then there’s the good old-fashioned word of mouth game. With sites like Yelp!, the word of mouth trick is alive and well. We can share our opinion with so many people now, both friend and complete stranger. Of course, with any word of mouth activity, there takes a degree of filtering and considering the source, but if you read enough reviews of a certain establishment, you can get the feel for what the experience will be like. When reading reviews, be on the look out for reviews that were obviously written by employees of the company, or reviews written by someone who felt slighted in a situation that they probably should not have been offended by.
